Air-drying a hoodie starts with its care label. The hood, cuffs, and other thick areas may still feel damp after the body feels dry, so give the garment enough space and check it before storing. Here is how to choose between laying it flat and hanging it.
1. Read the care label first
Follow the drying instructions on your specific hoodie. If the label says dry flat, use a clean, flat drying surface instead of a hanger. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission explains that drying directions are part of garment care instructions and gives “Dry flat” as a specific instruction. Read the FTC's care-label guide.
2. Remove excess water gently
After washing, press out extra water without twisting the hoodie. If it is still very wet, place it on a clean towel and press again before moving it to a drying surface. Whirlpool's hand-washing guide advises pressing out water, then hanging or laying garments flat, and avoiding wringing to help prevent damage.
3. Choose a flat surface or a hanger
For a hoodie labeled dry flat, spread it on a clean towel or flat drying rack and arrange the shoulders and hood without stretching them. If hanging is allowed, use a sturdy hanger or rail that supports the garment. Keep the hood from staying folded tightly against the back of the sweatshirt so air can reach both sides. A hoodie drying hanger with a raised hood support is one option for this hanging setup; it does not override a dry-flat care instruction.
4. Leave room for air and check the thick areas
Avoid crowding the hoodie between other clothes. Before putting it away, check the inside of the hood, cuffs, pockets, and lower hem as well as the body. Drying time varies with fabric thickness, remaining water, temperature, and airflow, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all number of hours.
Common questions
Will hanging a hoodie always be safe?
No single drying method suits every garment. Follow its label; choose a flat surface when the label calls for one or when hanging would leave a heavy wet garment poorly supported.
Does air-drying guarantee a hoodie will not shrink?
No. Fabric and washing conditions matter too. The care label is the best starting point for choosing a drying method.
Can a hoodie hanger make drying faster?
Keeping the hood open may give it more exposure to air, but actual drying time depends on the garment and room conditions. We have not published a controlled comparison for this product.
Choose a method your hoodie allows, support it without stretching it, and make sure the hood is fully dry before storing it.
